Give Generators & Exciters Enough Attention During Outages — Spot Problems Early!

By Bill Moore, PE
Director of Product Development
National Electric Coil

Many power plants plan and schedule the spring and fall outage seasons based on the inspection and maintenance needs of the turbine. In juggling maintenance activities and scarce dollars, the generator and its excitation system may be given less priority than a major turbine outage. Certainly, the trend over the last ten years has been to increase the maintenance intervals for major outages for these machines as much as possible, in order to maximize generation potential and to minimize down time and expense.

Such a strategy makes regular inspections and routine maintenance all the more important in identifying the initiation of problems potentially leading to forced outages. Below are brief discussions of key areas of concern that can be useful in compiling your own generator and exciter maintenance checklist.
